Trust-Based Philanthropy in Action: Supporting Grassroots Organizations for Major Community Impact

Continuing the trust-based philanthropy (TBP) discussion we began last year, this webinar explores how 2 organizations - Impact100 Philadelphia and the Hyams Foundation of Boston - have reimagined ways to invest in the community by focusing at the grassroots level and removing barriers to philanthropic support commonly faced by smaller nonprofit organizations.

Inspired by hearing Pia Infante and Vu Le speak at Philanos' 2020 conference in Seattle, Impact100 Philadelphia piloted a TBP approach in 2021 with a Community Awards program. The program was designed to reach into the community to learn about local needs but require minimum effort on the part of the local nonprofits to participate. Mary Broach will describe how Impact100 Philly designed and ran the Community Awards program, and will discuss what they learned that will inform their TBP efforts moving forward.

The mission of the Hyams Foundation is to increase economic, racial and social justice and power within low-income communities of Boston and Chelsea (Massachusetts), and the foundation has recently focused on pilots to strengthen the ecosystem of community-based organizations. Nahir Torres, Sr Program Officer of the Hyams Foundation will share the work they have been doing to shift decision-making closer to the ground and invest in building strong nonprofit leaders and resilient community-based organizations.

We hope that exploring these models will provide insight and guidance to our member giving circles interested in incorporating trust-based philanthropy into their giving programs.
